Art treasures of Rijksmuseum Schiphol shine behind a glass waterfall

AMSTERDAM – Schiphol Airport has a very prestigious glass construction on the Holland Boulevard. The inner walls of this glass pavilion for the Rijksmuseum consist of 10,000 glass panels which Saint-Gobain GLASSOLUTIONS has glued with tesa® ACXplus tape. The glass projects department of HERMANS GROEP has taken care of the engineering and development at the technical and visual levels. Conditioned transport and professional assembly has led to a successful end result. All-in-all, considering all of the (safety) regulations at Schiphol, this was a great challenge. This special glass construction is an innovative piece of work that distinguishes itself through its composition, structure, and size (2,200 m2).

With its location at Schiphol Airport, the glass structure is an international eye-catcher and an ambassador for tape and glass as building materials. Millions of visitors will pass through the Holland Boulevard, which Schiphol Airport has had renovated.
The combined passage/accommodation area between the E and F piers has been given a new interior designed by NEXT Architects. Saint-Gobain GLASSOLUTIONS won the tender for the delivery of a whopping 68 tonnes of glass for the massive glass core (showroom and store) and the separate glass walls around it.

Semi-automatic assembly Nothing was left to change in this ambitious project. For instance, Saint-Gobain GLASSOLUTIONS built its own assembly line to glue the glass strips into layered glass packages. An expert team glued 10,000 PANICLEAR 10 mm glass strips with a size of 3377x70x10 mm (l x w x d) into packages. Each glass strip received two strips of double sided tesa tape with a width of 6 mm and thickness of 1 mm across the entire length. The assembly of the heavy building blocks also required precision and craftsmanship. The glass projects department of HERMANS GROEP assembled the glass bricks into decorative partition walls with a height of 3.37 m, partially separated by showcases.

Low maintenance and safe
Tests indicate that the glass construction also meets the strict requirements set by Schiphol in terms of safety and maintenance. Various tests have been carried out, showing that the glass strips are easily replaceable in case of damage. The tape is fireproof and resistant to detergents.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol was officially opened today and can be found behind passport control at the Holland Boulevard near lounge 2. This allows passengers who travel via Schiphol to get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the Netherlands.

Hermans Groep: Expert in glass solutions, asbestos, and lifting work

Glass solutions
Hermans delivers, installs, and maintains everything that has to do with glass. From simple flat glass to complex glass constructions. From 24/7 emergency repairs to complete renovation projects. You can do much more with glass than just making a façade wind and waterproof. The team of glass specialists demonstrates this daily by thinking with clients all the way from design to assembly. There is no such thing as a standard solution, at least not in our view. Even our method of ‘glasswork’ differs from that of our colleagues. How? By always taking materials, solutions, approaches, and logistics one step further.

Asbestos removal
Hermans is a SCA-certified company (SC 530) for the removal of asbestos, asbestos-containing products, and asbestos-contaminated material. Their specialty is in the removal of asbestos-containing glazing sealant and putty coming from the glazing of houses and buildings from before 1994. Hermans performs this work in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.

Equipment rental
Mansher Materieelverhuur for lifting work is deployed in locations where expertise in the field of working safely makes the difference. All employees have been trained and certified for this, and we use approved, modern materials, including a mobile crane. This crane is specially designed for lifting and installing glass, but can also be used for many other purposes.
